The third synchronised survey for Nilgiri Tahr population estimation in Tamil Nadu and adjoining landscapes was conducted, estimating the population at 1364 in Tamil Nadu, a 4.68% increase from the previous year. The report was released on World Environment Day.
Tamil Nadu Integrated Bird Census 2025-2026
The Tamil Nadu Forest Department, as part of its annual state-level integrated bird census initiated in 2023 to monitor and strengthen conservation plans for bird diversity, conducted the Integrated Wetland Bird Census on December 27 and 28, 2025, and the Integrated Terrestrial Bird Census on February 14 and 15, 2026, with active participation from forest officials, bird experts, volunteers, and birdwatchers.
Quarry violations: 67 temporarily shut down, 469 vehicles seized, illegal mining identified and government action taken
Following inspections across quarries in Tamil Nadu under the orders of the Hon'ble Minister for Natural Resources, 67 quarries operating with violations have been temporarily shut down. Additionally, 469 vehicles involved in illegal mineral transport have been seized, and illegal mining has been identified in 78 locations.
Review Meeting Chaired by the Minister for Environment and Climate Change Department
A review meeting was held on 25.05.2026 at the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board, Guindy Head Office, chaired by the Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Ve. Ka. Rajeev. Key environmental issues, actions against polluting industries, and environmental damage caused by single-use plastics were discussed in the meeting.
